  • A print showing the death of General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. Montcalm is surrounded by his officers. Two First Nations men converse to the right, next to an exploded shell. An extensive text below, in French, describes the scene. The print has been cut down, removing the name of the publisher (Pierre Blin) at the bottom.

The Battle of the Plains of Abraham took place on 13 September 1759. It was one of the key battles of the French and Indian War, in which troops from Britain and British America fought against those from France and New France. Fighting with French regular forces at the battle were First Nations combatants and members of the Canadian Militia. Both Montcalm, the French commander, and General James Wolfe, the British commander, died as a result of the fighting. The battle led to the British seizing control of Quebec.

This print is a loose copy (in reverse) of one designed by François-Louis-Joseph Watteau (see RCIN 750441). The image is not an accurate rendering of the scene, but an imaginative creation for the French market.
