A gold lame coronation supertunica of gold thread on yellow warp brocaded in polychrome silk in a scrolling design incorporating Tudor roses, thistles, and shamrocks, within scrolling design of stylised palm leaves. Edged with gold bobbin lace incorporating gold colour metal spangles. Main body of gown and hanging sleeve lined dark red satin. Silver coloured metal hooks attached silk buttonhole stitch either side of centre front.
Full length gown, front opening. Fronts cut in one piece from shoulder to hem. The back composed of triangular panel set into raised waist. The back skirts gathered tightly in at centre back waist seam. Low round neck, the lining arranged over shoulders to form revere running down from front shoulder to waist. Full hanging sleeves cut deeply into back panel, fullness gathered into head of sleeves with stout pleats, with double row of running stitches. The hanging sleeve extending to knee. The front edge of front opening of sleeve finished with French seam. Gold lace trimming down front, hem and open edge of hanging sleeves. Hand stitched.Provenance
Worn by Queen Victoria at her Coronation at Westminster Abbey, 28 June 1838.
Sent on loan to the Museum of London in 1948 and later returned. -
