A stoneware vase of pierced, carved chrysanthemum blooms and a molded rope tied around the neck and base, with celadon glaze. Signed on the base.
Celadon is a distinctive green-glazed ceramic originally from China. During the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), celadon was the main type of ceramic made on the Korean peninsula. The colour is dependent on the presence of iron in the clay, and of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and quartz particles in the glaze.
Made by Kim Se-Yong (b.1946), who was designated a Korean Master Craftsman for Ceramics in 2002. Previously he was Professor of Ceramic Art at Chungkang College of Cultural Industries.Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the citizens and Mayor of Andong, Jung Dong-ho, during her visit to Hahoe village in Andong Province during the State Visit to South Korea, 1999.
