A shallow round celadon dish by Yoo Byung Ho, of flared shape on a round foot, decorated with a mottled grey-green ground with an off-centre circular reserved containing stylised bamboo.
This type of ceramic is known as Buncheong ware, a traditional form of Korean stoneware, which was popular in the early Joseon dynasty (late-fourteenth to early-fifteenth centuries). The clay used to make Buncheong ware is similar to that used to make celadon, but it not as processed and refined, which results in an earthier and coarser grey-bodied ceramic.
This dish, made by the prominent Korean ceramicist, Yoo Byung Ho, combines geometric forms with a subtle yet stylised central landscape scene. The landscape depicts a duck on water surrounded by reeds. The design has been incised into the clay and filled with a dark grey glaze. The same colour is used for the many small dots on the outer part of the dish. A contrasting buff-coloured glaze, which appears almost iridescent when it catches the light, has been applied in parts.Provenance
