Cassava squeezer 1953-75
Straw | 30.0 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 74321
-
A basket-woven cassava squeezer comprising an open basket weave column narrowing to a loop at one end.
Cassava is one of the staple foods of central and southern America. The 'bitter' variety requires extensive preparation to remove poisonous acid before consumption. The vegetable is peeled and grated and then placed in a squeezer like this one, which is hung by its loop to a beam and stretched. As the weave tightens, the pulp is squeezed dry and the toxins are removed with the juice.Provenance
