Metropolitan Police Report from Buckingham Palace station dated 3 October 1917 detailing in manuscript, on a printed form, the discovery of a shell case on 3 October 1917 in the lake in the Buckingham Palace garden.
The report reads:
Sir
At 3.30pm 3rd October Mr J Cardy an assistant gardener found in the lake in garden of Buckingham Palace a large piece of shell case marked HNT 3", 2.0 + 5 cwt + 12 + 13 PD.
In all probability the shell was fired during an Air Raid.
Piece of shell case herewith. J Smith Insp.
Hon; Sir Derek Keppel
GCVO, etc, etc,
The shrapnel subject of this report was transferred to Imperial War Museum in 1919 and then to the Museum of London and probably forms part of the miscellaneous batch under RCIN 69829. -
