A lady's dress, in two parts of bodice and skirt, both in MacDonnell of Glengarry tartan silk velvet, worn by Queen Victoria when Princess Victoria of Kent. The bodice has a wide scoop neckline trimmed with lace; pleats and bows are applied down the centre front. It has puff elbow-length sleeves with ribbons attached at the shoulders; a slightly V waist line hides the waist of the skirt.

Tartan fabrics were popular in the 19th century, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert embraced the wearing of tartan in their own clothes and that of their children. Silk velvets of this type, woven to imitate tartan, were popular both in England and France between 1825-1840.
