Stirrup-hilted infantry sabre; the hilt German, with a heavily scrolled quillon, the shaped wood grip backed with metal and a plain pommel. The curved, single-edged steel blade, possibly eastern, with a sharp groove running the full length and 12 stars struck at irregular intervals down each side.
Provenance
This sword is probably no. 3050 in George IV's Armoury at Carlton House, which was acquired by him in November 1821.
At that time it had a steel scabbard and a 'Black Leather Sword Knot with Silver Stitches and Silver Bullion Tassel'. It is described as having been presented to the King 'when at Hanover'. Sent to Windsor on 23 July 1842. -
