William Bowen (active 1721-71)
Cannon 1742
Bronze | RCIN 71527
-
A bronze 3 lb cannon bearing an integrally-cast royal coat of arms (for George II) and the coat of arms of the Duke of Montagu (Master of Ordnance); on a painted four-wheeled cast iron gun carriage. William Bowen was associated with the Royal foundry at Woolwich from 1741 onwards. It is possible that this cannon, and its companions, were made for William, Duke of Cumberland. The garrison carriage dates from 1830/31 and was commissioned by the Board of Ordnance. Before this date the cannon would have had a wooden carriage.
