Andreas Schalch (1692-1776)
Cannon 1729
Bronze | RCIN 71500
-
A bronze 3 lb cannon (Borgard breech) bearing an integrally-cast royal coat of arms (for George II) and the coat of arms of the Duke of Argyll (Master of Ordnance); on a painted four-wheeled cast iron gun carriage. Andreas Schalch ran the Royal Foundry at Woolwich from 1716 to 1770. It is possible that this cannon, and its companions, were made for William, Duke of Cumberland. The garrison carriage dates from 1830/31 and was commissioned by the Board of Ordnance. Before this date the cannon would have had a wooden carriage.
