Herne's Oak 6 - 6 Nov 1886
-
Photograph of a drawing once in the possession of Canon John Neale Dalton, Chaplain to Queen Victoria and said to be from a painting of Herne's Oak. The work is dated November 6, 1886 on the mount, but it is undetermined if this is the date of the original painting. See also 503371 and 2403105 and 2403054.
Although there were many ancient oak trees in Windsor Great Park that were credited as the eponymous oak in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor, this photograph is of a drawing of the first Herne's Oak that was felled on the orders of King George III in 1796. A second tree, identified as Herne's Oak stood nearby, but was blown down during a storm in 1863. The legend of Herne appears in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor as an ancient oak tree that is supposed to be haunted by a former keeper of Windsor Great Park. -
