It formed part of an arch dedicated to Vespasian; the inscription refers to dedicator Gaius Paccius Africanus, a priest and patron of the city of Leptis Magna (also called Lepcis Magna). The reverse reads [AFRICA]NUS PO[NTIFEX] / [AFRI]CAE PAT[RONUS]
Provenance
ln ancient times the base was part of the Flavian Arch at Lepcis Magna, built between 30 July 77 and 30 June 78 AD, and later built into the Byzantine Gate. Excavated in 1816 and presented to George lV about 1820. At some stage after being presented to George lV the base was incorporated with other architectural material into the artifìcial ruins at Virginia Water.
