A small model Asante stool in gold; the inscribed seat curves up at the sides and has a small compartment with a hinged lid in the centre. The seat is on four corner posts with fretted decoration and a central post, all above a rectangular base.
The stool is symbolic of an Asante (Ashanti) chieftain's leadership; each chief would have his own stool which would also be seen as a seat for his soul. One of the main symbols of the Asante people is the Golden Stool, which according to legend was summoned from the sky by a high priest in order to unite the nation. It is said to be kept in the palace of the king and is rarely seen, it must never touch the ground and no one is ever to sit on it; it is depicted on the flag of the Asante nation.Provenance
