Metal spear with a pointed tip and a chequer board patterned haft, bound with wire to a plain turned wood handle. The head with a central rib with chequer board pattern. With an accompanying russet leather spear tip cover, bound with plain leather thong.
Provenance
Sent to King George V on the occasion of his coronation by Emeperor Menelik of Abyssinia in 1911, with five other spears (now missing).
This and the other Abyssinian gifts were lent to the Board of Education for exhibition at the Bethnal Green Museum in 1911 and recorded in a 1918 'List of Crown Loans' there (V&A Archive, AO/98). They were subsequently dispatched to the Tower in 1958 and later sent on long-term loan to the Horniman Museum in 1967. -
