Steel Model of the first 12-pounder 12-cwt gun-barrel built at HM Dockyard, Portsmouth in 1916. It is made from turned steel and stamped on the barrel PO Yd 1916 / QF12Pr-12cwt, this refers to the QF 12-Pounder 12 hundredweight naval gun with a three-inch calibre. 12-pounds is the weight of projectile and 12-cwt the weight of barrel and breech. During the First World War this type of gun was used as coastal anti-aircraft artillery.
Provenance
Given to Queen Mary on a visit to the HM Dockyard, Portsmouth, 1916. Later formed part of King George V's War Museum at Windsor Castle, established to display his collection of First World War souvenirs; the King was assisted by the Royal Archivist & Librarian John Fortescue (1859-1933). Many of these objects were loaned to the Imperial War Museum in 1936 at the suggestion of King Edward VIII.
