Stained glass window panel, portrait format, of Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence as St George, with the arms of England, on an acanthus scroll plinth, bearing a plaque with the inscription, 'To the dear memory of / ALBERT VICTOR / CHRISTIAN EDWARD / DUKE OF CLARENCE / AND AVONDALE / Erected by / His loving mother / QUEEN ALEXANDRA / A.D. 1905. / He died 1892. in the 28th year of his age.' This stained glass window, which commemorates the eldest son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra was designed by JW Lisle and made by the studio of CE Kempe. Lisle had joined the studio in 1886 and had become chief cartoonist in 1893. Originally made for the Ministers' Staircase, Buckingham Palace, it was damaged during the bombing of 1940 and was moved to the basement. In 1984, Lisle's daughter Mrs Margaret Stavridi discovered the design for the window while researching the Kempe studios. The window was subsequently lent to the Stained Glass Museum, Ely, where it was repaired.
Provenance
Commissioned by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, c.1903. It was originally from the Ministers' Staircase at Buckingham Palace and thought to have been moved after air raids in the 1940s.
