Balaam, Henry : Lombard St., London
Charles Blount c.1612-1616
-
An engraving of Charles Blount (1563–1606), 8th Baron Mountjoy from 1594, Lord Deputy of Ireland 1600, and Earl of Devonshire from 1603. A half-length portrait, in a hat with a brooch, high ruff, stripped tunic and lace cuffs. Within scrolled oval frame and inscription. The publication details – 'are to be sold by Henry Balam in Lombard street' – have been trimmed from the bottom of this impression. The address is found on prints Balaam published in the 1610s. This print is lettered around the portrait: "HONORAT: D'. CAROL: BLVNT: CO: DEVON BARO MOVNTIOY"; in the cartouche: "The / Right honourable CHARLES BLVNT / Earle of Deuon: Baron Mountioy / and Knight of the Garter.".
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano and his younger brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo in Rome. Described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Heads of English illustrious Personages, the album was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and incorporated into the sequences of British portrait prints in the collection.
