Two-hand Sword (Claidheamh dà làimh) c. 1575-1625
-
Two-handed sword. Scottish guard and pommel, the former probably late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, the latter probably earlier. German blade (possibly Solingen), probably contemporary with the pommel; the grip, later.
With long flattened oval grip covered with black leather and bound at intervals with copper foil. Black ferrous shell guards and dropended quillons. Double-edged blade with three fullers and engraved on faces with circles, crosses and a wolf-like animal.
The stamped mark is probably the hunting-horn attributed to Peter Weyersberg (Wiersberg or Wersberch) of Solingen (fl.1609-28).Provenance
Presented to George, Prince of Wales by 'Mrs Soolt' in 1803.
