  • Pikeman's breastplate of vestigial ‘peascod’ fashion, formed in one piece with a narrow neck-opening and a flange at the waist, the latter shortened within working life to convert the breastplate to use by an harquebusier, its main edges formed with plain inward turns accompanied by pairs of incised lines, and its belly stamped with the name TOIRAS.

Text adapted from Arms and Armour in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen: European Armour, London, 2016

    Provenance

The name TOIRAS stamped on the belly indicates that the breastplate forms part of a large group of such pieces captured in 1627 from the French ship St Esprit commanded by Jean Caylar d’Anduze de Saint-Bonnet, Marquis de Toiras (1586–1636), subsequently Marshal of France.
