An inkwell, formed from a horse's hoof with silver gilt mounts. The hinged cover with finial cast with soldier on horse, on naturalistic base; hoof with silver gilt fetlock, inscribed & horseshoe. Inscription in lid; glass inkwell with silver gilt mount.
Ronald was the charger ridden by Lord Cardigan in the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854. All four of his hoofs were preserved as relics. One was presented to King Edward VII (as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Hussars); one was presented to the regiment; one was given as a gift to a friend of Lord Cardigan, and the fourth remains with the family, where it is on display at Deene Park alongside Ronald's stuffed head and preserved tail.Provenance
