Caterina Sforza 1582

An engraving of Caterina Sforza di Santa Fiora (Caterina de' Nobili, c.1535–1605). Antonio Campi, the painter from Cremona, is known to have been a designer of prints, for example the illustrations to Cremona fedelissima (Cremona 1582; 1585/6) that were engraved by Agostino Carracci. Cassiano's impression is a later state with the portrait re-engraved by another hand to show Caterina older and in more sober dress.
This print is lettered around the portrait: "CATHERINA DE NOBILI SFORZA CO. DI SANTA FIORE."; on the plinth in the lower left corner: "Antonio / Campo."; along the bottom: "Merta diuin Poeta il suo ualore … / Conuerria studio di diuin Pittore: // 1582 ".
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo in Rome. Described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Italian Poets, Historians &c:a, the album comprised 159 prints. It was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and its contents sold during the early twentieth century, when only a few of Cassiano's foreign non-royal portrait prints were retained for the collection. For more information see Mark McDonald, The Print Collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo.
