An engraving of Aldus Manutius (Aldo Manuzio, c.1450–1515), publisher, typographer and humanist. A bust length portrait, with long hair and cap. At the upper left corner, an anchor with a dolphin, symbol of the "Festina lente" (meaning "make haste slowly") and Manuzio printer's mark. His most famous production was the illustrated romance Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (Venice 1499). This print is a pair to RCIN 670104. This print is lettered along the bottom: "ALDVS. PIVS. MANVTIVS. R.".
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo in Rome. Described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Italian Poets, Historians &c:a, the album comprised 159 prints. It was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and its contents sold during the early twentieth century, when only a few of Cassiano's foreign non-royal portrait prints were retained for the collection.
