An engraving of Sigismondo Malatesta: a bust length portrait, in profile left, with armour, mantle, his left hand in gauntlet holding a baton. Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta (1417–68), feudal lord, mercenary captain and patron of the arts, was the leader of the Venetian forces against the Turks in 1465. This engraving is after a medal by Pisanello and is the only print that Cassiano owned from a series of four portraits after Italian Renaissance medals.
This print is lettered around the portrait: "SIGISMVNDVS. DE. MALATESTIS. ARIMINI. 71. TE. ROMANE. ECLLESIE. LAPITANEVS."; across the centre: "GENERALIS"; at the lower left: "IDGeijn. excū".
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo in Rome and described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Military Commanders, comprising 143 prints. The album was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and its contents sold during the early twentieth century, when only a few of Cassiano's foreign non-royal portrait prints were retained for the collection.
