An engraving of Robert Sidney (1563–1626), courtier and poet, Baron Sidney of Penshurst from 1603, Viscount Lisle from 1605, 1st Earl of Leicester from 1618. A half- length portrait of an elderly man, in large ruff, furred mantle, slashed doublet. This print is lettered around the portrait: "HONORATISS: D'. ROBE[RTUS] SIDNEY / COM: LEY.CESTRIÆ VI LISLE / BARO DE PEN[SH]URST / AUR: PERIS: EQ:"; outside the oval at the lower right and lower left: "Anno / 1617."; in the cartouche at the lower centre: "The / Right Honourable ROBERT Sidney … / Ordr of the Gartre.; // Simon Passæus / sculp: L: // Are to be sould in Popes head / Ally by I: Sud & Geor: Humble."
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano and his younger brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo in Rome. Described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Heads of English illustrious Personages, the album was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and incorporated into the sequences of British portrait prints in the collection.For more information see Mark McDonald, The Print Collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo.
