An engraving of John Penington (?1584–1646), vice-admiral on Walter Raleigh's expedition to the Orinoco in 1617, and to the second ship money fleet in 1636. A half-length portrait, deep lace collar, armour and scarf over his right shoulder. Oval within Latin inscription and border; English inscription below. This print is lettered around the portrait: "EFFIGIES. GENEROSISS: ET. FORTISS: MILITIS. IONANNIS. PENINGTON EQVITIS. AVRATI."; in the cartouche at the lower centre: "The true portracture, of that Famous & Valliant Sea Cap:t … / Vice Admirall of his Ma:ties Fleete for this expedit.ion Ao: 1636"; along the bottom: "Sould by Tho: Ienner at Exchange. // C:or V. Dalen. scul".
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano and his younger brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo in Rome. Described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Heads of English illustrious Personages, the album was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and incorporated into the sequences of British portrait prints in the collection.For more information see Mark McDonald, The Print Collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo.
