Mr. Norman as the Sultan of Cashmire on the Celebrated young Elephant in the Grand Pantomime of the Golden Fish now performing at the Theatre Royal Covent Garden 6 - 6 Feb 1812
-
A hand-coloured print of an elephant standing in left side profile with Mr Norman, the circus performer, seated in a chair on the back of the animal with his arms extended to the sides, in his right a lance. In front of him and seated on the animal's neck sits the smaller figure of a man, the mahout, 'driving' the elephant with his hand extended in front of him. The animal is draped with a red coloured cloth.
The pantomime 'Harlequin and Padnamaba, or the Golden Fish' was performed at Covent Garden in 1811-12 and included a real elephant, called Chunee, which had been brought from Bengal. Mr Norman was a popular circus performer.
