RCIN 654504
Robert, H.
Margaret Finch, Queen of the Gypsies at Norwood [lettered title] dated 1742
-
A full-length portrait of Margaret Finch, seated at the entrance to a dwelling; her legs drawn up to her chest, her chin resting on knees, her head inclined to the left, a pipe in her mouth. A small dog leaping against her knee; another resting in front of her. A brief biography is given beneath the picture.
Margaret Finch was born in Sutton in 1740 and was celebrated as a fortune teller. Part of a well-established community of Gypsies who lived in Norwood (now incorporated into South London), Finch was known as ‘The Queen of the Norwood Gypsies’. Finch reportedly lived to the age of 108. The print was published in 1742, after Finch's death, but claimed to be based on a likeness taken in 1739. -
