Newnham
Miss Farren in the Character of Hermia 1785
-
A print of Elizabeth Farren as Hermia in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. She is shown as if rising from sleep. This is a plate to John Bell's edition of Shakespeare. The publication line has been trimmed from this impression, but other impressions give a date of publication of 5 August 1785.
For Bell's Shakespeare, see Kalman A. Burnim and Philip J. Highfill, John Bell, Patron of British Theatrical Portraiture. A Catalog of the Theatrical Portraits in His Editions of Bell's Shakespeare and Bell's British Theatre, 1998, where the printmaker of this plate is identified as Simon Newnham, fl.1762-1788. -
