Gold signet ring, the shoulders cast and enamelled with crowns above an HMR monogram. The ring is decorated with enamelled rose, thistle and fleurs-de-lys. The top is set with a lozenge-shaped diamond, carved with an intaglio crown, Royal coat of arms and HMR cypher.
Provenance
The stone is possibly that commissioned by Charles I for Henrietta Maria and engraved by the gem-cutter Francis Walwyn for £267; in the collection of Mary II; collection of Elihu Yale by 1722; acquired by Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke in 1723 for 355 guineas; collection of B.P. Blachford and sold Christie's, London, 19 June 1817, lot 7, where it was falsely attributed to Mary, Queen of Scots; collection of the Duke of Brunswick (d.1884); purchased by C. Drury E. Fortnum and presented to Queen Victoria, 24 March 1887 (Oman, 'British Rings', p.108 and pl.51a).
