Cameo depicting St. George on horseback with the dragon below. He wears a classical cuirass and helmet and brandishes a sword in his right hand. He holds a shield with his left arm. Set within a raised brown border.
This cameo is probably 16th century and may have once belonged to a Garter jewel. It may be the piece referred to in a bill of 19 April 1787, from Thomas Gray for ‘setting an onyx George in a Ring’ for the Prince of Wales. It may also have been the ‘onyx George mounted as a ring’ listed at Windsor in 1837.
