A mezzotint depicting Catherine Bunbury and Mary Gwyn in the characters of the Merry Wives of Windsor, with Windsor Castle in the distance. First state, before title altered; see British Museum inv.no.1978,U.692 for an impression of a state with a different title.
The friendship between Mistress Ford and Mistress Page conveyed by Shakespeare in his The Merry Wives of Windsor is hinted at in this print of the sisters Catherine Bunbury and Mary Gwyn, noted beauties, who are shown in the characters of the two Merry Wives. Both Bunbury and Gwyn were often in Windsor as their husbands worked at court.
