A pair of large blue-and-white porcelain vases. Each with tall cylindrical body, narrower cylindrical neck and projecting rim, and low foot; the glazed base with an empty double ring in blue. Painted round the sides in two ranks are square panels with landscapes with figures or animals, antique objects or floral subjects, all in a blue ground with white floral sprays in reserve. On the flattened shoulder and neck are various geometric borders.

These vases are not readily identifiable in the records of Brighton Pavilion or Windsor Castle, but are possibly those depicted in a group on a side table in Charles Wild’s view of the King’s Gallery at Kensington Palace (c.1816). A handwritten label on the base of RCIN 64055.2 records its breakage at Buckingham Palace in January 1892; on both, the printed label, ‘GvR’ under a crown, ‘BUCKINGHAM PALACE L.C.D.’, with ‘Corridor 240 South End’ handwritten.
