Iberian steel cup-hilted rapier. Oval pommel, bun-shaped tang, quillons, knuckle-guard and loop guard. Barrel-shaped, wooden oval grip carved with a trellis of grooves, bound with herringbone silver wire. Straight two-edged Spanish blade (Toledo), stamped fuller.
Provenance
Presented to George IV when Prince of Wales by John Hookham Frere in 1804. According to a letter by Frere dating 6 March 1804, the sword had belonged to Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alva, and was acquired during the dispersal of the property of the House of Alva.
