Sword (kora) first half nineteenth century

  • A Nepali sword (kora),the iron hilt with two circular discs (guards) flanking the grip and with a spirally-fluted baluster finial. The hilt decorated wth gilt edging and with flowerheads. Brightly burnished steel curved blade with a gilt line and dot motifs on one edge and an eye. Scabbard.
    Provenance

    Between 1853 and 1855 it was photographed by Charles Thurston Thompson (1816–1868), who went on to become the South Kensington Museum’s first official photographer (see albumen print RCIN 2369588). It was subsequently displayed in the North Corridor at Windsor Castle with other arms and armour.
