Military boatshell small sword; British brightly burnished steel hilt, c.1790, with an oval-shaped pommel with a tang button above the barrel-shaped wooden grip bound with silver wire. With a heart-shaped device between the lobes of shell. Straight two-edged blade, late eighteenth century, etched with gold.
Provenance
In George IV's Armoury at Carlton House (CH AA 182) when it was recorded with a 'Black Scabbard Steel Chape', now missing.
Sent to Windsor Castle on 23 April 1840 subsequently displayed in the North Corridor there (no. 1301). -
