Engraving of Josephine, Empress of the French. Whole length with curled hair, crown, jewelled earrings and necklace, lace collar, gown, and mantle. The Empress is pictured seated on a throne, with columns and drapery behind. With French inscription below. India laid. Plate from Charles Gavard's Galeries historiques de Versailles published in the 1830s and 1840s. The plate is signed 'Diagraphe et Pantographe Gavard', indicating that the plate was created using an invention devised by Gavard which allowed him to create accurate copies of images in various scaled-down sizes.
