LE TRAITRE LOUIS XVI 1792
-
Aquatint with etching of Louis XVI, King of France. Bust length in profile with curled wig. Within an oval border handing within a lantern, with French inscriptions above and below, including publisher's address, 'A Paris chez Villeneuve, Graveur, rue Zacharie St Severin Maison du Pissage No.21.' For a corresponding portrait of Louis XVI, see RCIN 617390.
This pair of portraits of Louis XVI and his consort Marie Antoinette were published in 1792, shortly after their arrest and imprisonment by revolutionary forces. These revolutionary satires present the King and Queen as portraits hanging within street lanterns, with the inscription 'Cette suspension vaut la déchéance' above the portrait of the King: this inscription suggests that the suspended lanterns deserve a fall. -
