Engraving of Louis XVI, King of France. Whole length with curled wig, frilled tie, embroidered robes, ermine mantle, and with the Collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit. The King is pictured standing, holding a plumed hat in right hand and with a sceptre in left, with a view of columns and drapery behind. With French inscription below. India laid. Plate from Charles Gavard's Galeries historiques de Versailles published in the 1830s and 1840s. The plate is signed 'Diagraphe et Pantographe Gavard', indicating that the plate was created using an invention devised by Gavard which allowed him to create accurate copies of images in various scaled-down sizes.
