Engraving of Princess Marie Adelaide of France. An allegorical portrait in which the Princess is depicted as the personification of Air. Princess Marie Adelaide of France is shown three quarter length with a loose gown and mantle, seated in a cloud and holding the reins of a peacock in right hand. With French inscription below, including publisher's address, 'Grave d'apres un des 4 Tableaux du Cabinet de Mgr. Le Dauphin a Versailles, A Paris ches la Ve. de F. Chereau rue S. Jacques avec 2 Piliers d'Or avec Privilege do Roi.'
One of a series of four engravings depicting the four daughters of Louis XV: Louise Elizabeth of France, Duchess of Parma; Princess Henriette of France; Princess Marie Adelaide of France; and Princess Victoire of France. The series of portraits reproduce Jean Marc Nattier's portraits of the Princesses as the four elements: Earth, Fire, Air, and Water.
