MARIA THERESA AVSTRIACA D. G. FRANCORVM ET NAVARRAEM REGINA 1664
-
Engraving of Marie Thérèse of Spain, Queen of France. Bust length with hair in ringlets, pearl earrings and necklace, gown edged in ermine, and a jewelled bodice. Within an oval border bearing Latin inscription, with fleur-de-lis at each corner. Cut down.
This portrait was engraved by the French printmaker Antoine Masson. Masson worked with Francois de Poilly in Paris in the early 1660s and in 1664 he obtained a privilege to publish his own prints, as with this portrait of the Queen. Masson's distinctive style of engraving and his ability to capture tone in line, made him a popular portrait engraver, and large, near life-sized prints such as this exemplify the range of his technique.Provenance
