Engraving of Louis XIV, King of France. Three quarter length with curled wig, lace tie, armour, sash, and mantle. The King is pictured standing, with left hand on hip and holding a baton in right, with a plumed helmet to the left and columns and drapery behind. With French inscription below including publisher's address, 'Se vend a Paris Chez Drevet rue St Jacques au Point de France Atenant St Sever'. Cut down. Fourth state, following the removal of the creation date and the alteration of the positioning of the hand and head, but before the. For an earlier state, probably the third state, see RCIN 617016.
This print was engraved by Pierre Drevet (1663-1738) after a painting by Charles-François Poerson (1653-1725), and published by Girard Audran (1640-1703) at his address at Rue Saint-Jacques, Les deux piliers d'or, before being published in its second state by Drevet in 1692: Drevet also published the third state, with some re-touching to the head and wig. This rare fourth state shows the print published by Drevet at his address at Point de France Atenant St Severin, with the date '1692' removed, and with significant changes to the positioning of the hand on the baton. -
