[Henri IV, King of France] 1602
-
Engraving of Henri IV, King of France and Navarre. Whole length with short hair, beard, plumed cap, closed ruff, embroidered robes, and with the Order of the Holy Spirit. The King is pictured standing, with left hand on hip and holding a glove in right hand, with a view of a castle in a landscape in the background. The figure is presented within a archway, decorated with scrolled designs. A plate from William Segar's Honour, military and civill (London, 1602). First state, without a title engraved in the lower right corner. Cut down.
This plate originated from an heraldic volume by William Segar, which was published in 1602 with illustrations by printmaker William Rogers. Rogers' illustrations depicted eight historical figures representing various Honours and Knighthoods, each within a decorative archway. Only three of the figures were signed by Rogers, this portrait of Henry IV being one of them. -
