Engraving with etching of Louis I the Pious, Holy Roman Emperor with his four sons: Lothair I, Holy Roman Emperor; Louis King of the Germans; Pepin I King of Aquitaine; and Charles II the Bald, Holy Roman Emperor. An allegorical scene representing the succession of Louis the Pious in which the enthroned Emperor offers the sceptre to his son Charles, pictured beside the figure of his mother, Judith of Bavaria. To the right, the Emperors other sons, Lothair, Louis, and Pepin reach for their father's crown accompanied by the figure of Discord. Within a decorative frame, with the bust of Louis I above, and with French inscription on entablature below. Cut down.
From a series of allegorical scenes designed by Charles Nicolas Cochin Benoît and published as illustrations to Jean Francois Hénault's Nouvel Abrégé chronologique de l'histoire de France (1768). Cochin began designing the plates as early as 1765 which were later engraved by Benoît Louis Prévost between 1768 and 1672. -
