An Abyssinian silver armlet (bitäwa) applied overall with gold filigree work ;and plain silver studs and beading, with two central cartouches, one containing a mounted green precious stone, the other a mounted red precious stone. Hinged, with a red leather interior.
Armlets of this kind were presented by the emperor to the most successful warriors. They were worn on the right arm.Provenance
Sent to Queen Victoria by Menelik, Negus of Shewa (later Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia, r.1889-1913).
No. 2084 in the North Corridor Inventory of Windsor Castle, where it was listed alongside a letter reading "Mr Hammond [probably Edmund Hammond, permanent under-secretary of state for foreign affairs,1854-73] presents his compliments to Sir T. Biddulph [Thomas Biddulph, Keeper of the Privy Purse] and begs to forward to him the accompanying presents, an armlet and an ornamented sword [not identified], which have been sent to the Queen by Menelik, the Chief of Shoa. Foreign Office, October 7. 1869" -
