Cruciform hilted sword, hilt of gilt steel, short flattened cylindrical pommel. Straight quillons of oblong section and with circular guard for forefinger. Wooden grip (formerly with wire). Blade etched and with gilt at hilt with the arm of LOPEZ DE ZUNIGA.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV when Prince of Wales, 20 January 1810.
Displayed in the Armoury at Carlton House (CH AA 1998). The inventory records that the sword is said to have belonged to the Spanish hero, Don Diego Ynigo Lopez de Zuniga, who helped to defeat the Moors at the battle of the Navas de Tolosa in 1212. Sent to Windsor Castle 8 August 1842 and displayed in the North Corridor there (no. 1006). -
