An engraving of Giovanni Carlo (or Giancarlo) Doria (1576–1625), son of the Doge Agostino Doria. Bust portrait, with his right hand on a sword. framed within an oval border with Latin inscription. As recorded on the print, Vouet made the drawing that provided the model for it in 1620, while he was in Genoa (Henuae). On 4 September 1621 Vouet wrote from that city to tell Cassiano that he had painted the portrait of Doria that is now in Paris. The head and collar in both the painting and the print are very similar but other differences indicate that the print does not reproduce the painting and that the drawing must be the common source.
This print is lettered around the portrait: "IOANNES CAROLVS DORIA AVGUSTINI FILIVS SERENISSIMI DVCIS GENVÆ &."; at the lower left: "MLasne fecit Paris."; at the lower right: "Si. Voüet deli. Henuæ 1620."
The print formed part of an album of portrait prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo in Rome and described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Military Commanders, comprising 143 prints. The album was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and its contents sold during the early twentieth century, when only a few of Cassiano's foreign non-royal portrait prints were retained for the collection.
