Basket-hilted Broadsword (Claidheamh mōr) A Huntly Race prize sword.
British silver hilt (Elgin, Scotland) c.1713 by William Scott the Younger; the blade German (Solingen), probably early eighteenth century. The barrel-shaped silver grip spirally bound with silver wire; two-edged blade.
The broad main knuckle-guard, is engraved:

Which ar giuin to the poor who may/ Pray that ye Monarchie and Royall family my be Lasting/ And glorious in thes kingdomes.
Struck on the main knuckle-guard are three punches,
1) the capital letters VS conjoined in a square,
2) the word ELGIN in a rectangle with rounded corners, and
3) the capital letter D in a shield-shaped punch.Provenance
Acquired by George III. It is possible that this is one of two silver basket-hilted swords in the posthumous inventory of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1726-65), which passed to the king.
Sent to George IV's Armoury at Carlton House on 28 March 1822 (CH AA 3142). Sent to Windsor Castle 8 August 1842 and displayed in the North Corridor there (no. 1147).
The winner of this sword, George Gordon of Glastirem, took part in the Rising of 1715. He surrendered at Banff in March 1716, and died in 1721. Glastirem is the name of a farm on the Duke of Gordon's estate in Ruthven Parish, near Buckie. If the sword was in the possession of Cumberland, it suggests that it was taken from James Gordon of Glastirem, the elder son of the winner, who was active in 1745 and surrendered 1747.
