Basket-hilted Broadsword (Claidheamh mōr) A Huntly Race prize sword.
Silver Hilt British (Old Aberdeen Scotland) c.1727 by Robert Cruickshank, blade German (Solingen) possibly 2nd ½ C17th silver hilt, knuckleguard roots decorated with acanthus tip, main knuckleguard rear quillon in form of fleur-de-lys; barrel-shaped silver grip with silver wire; two-edged blade with three fullers-central one with inscription.
Struck on the stool towards the blade with four marks,
1) a closed crown within an oval,
2) the capital letters R C in a rectangle,
3) the capital letters OABD (A and B conjoined) in a rectangle with rounded ends,
4) the capital letter C in a rectangle with cut corners.

The broad main knuckle-guard engraved: Given by the Duke of Gordon and Winn at Huntly Castle the /second Thursday of Septr 1727 years all Horses not exceeding 13 hands/ and 2 inches high are admitted to runn and the winning Horse to be sold/ for ane Hundred merks if required by the Judge of the Race. the/ Riders staiking Crouns a piece which are given to the Poor to/ pray that the Monarchy and Royal Family may be lasting and/ Glorious in these Kingdoms.
It is possible that this is the 'Silver Do (i.e. basket-hilted sword) gilt blade' of the post-mortem inventory of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1726-65). The Duke's collection passed to George III.
