Maximilian II c.1844-1847
-
Hand coloured engraving of Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor. Full length portrait wearing a crown, ruff, armour, mantle and the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. In his right hand he holds a piece of paper, while his left hand rests on the hilt of his sword. The Gothic arched portrait sits within a rectangular frame inscribed with 'MAXIMILIAN II.' The print has been taken from a book titled 'Die Deutschen Kaiser', published by S. Schmerber c.1844-47. The book is illustrated by printed portraits of Holy Roman Emperors, all after painted portraits completed in the nineteenth-century and hung in Frankfurt's Kaisersaal, a room of the City Hall once used for the coronation of Holy Roman Emperors. A collector's mark suggests that the prints were acquired by Queen Victoria. The plate has been trimmed.
