Joannes Austriacus After 1602
-
Engraving of John of Austria, Viceroy of Naples and the illegitimate son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Head and shoulder length portrait in profile facing left, wearing robes, armour, a ruff and the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The portrait sits within an oval border bearing the Latin inscription 'IOANNES AVSTRIACVS PRINCEPS FRANCAEVILLAE, GVBERNATOR GENERALIS IN BELGIO.' The print appears to be a copy after RCIN 612946, created by Dominicus Custos in 1602. German text on the verso suggests the print was cut from a book.
